Importing big MS Access legacy DB into Drupal nodes

Pavel Karoukin's picture

Sometimes I need to move old data from a client's legacy site. Last time it was MS Access.. 96 Mb of CVS data =)

Here is how I managed to import all of this:

1) First thing I did - I imported CSV files as tables into the same DB which the Drupal site uses. This would simplify working with it and in case something would be forgotten you could always import this back. And once you are sure that all data is in place - just dump the imported tables.

Why WordPress is Bad

WordPress is a great piece of software... for blogs. It's also good for quick sketching of small websites with all static pages. It allows for quick and hassle free change of page content, while handling header/footer/sidebars itself. So it has some CMS capabilities.

Overall, WP has a great admin panel focused on content editing. You can get your blog launched within 5 mins and you can install custom blog themes easily too. So it's great, until you try to use Wordpress for something it is not designed for.

Why Prototype?

If you keep asking yourself this question, you can be assured that you are not alone in wondering what this “grayscreen prototyping” is all about.

For us it simply means the process of developing an easily modified and extensible model of a planned software system, or in our case, a website. What we do, we create one or a series of HTML/CSS documents that would represent the future web application in action.

Formal Education: Worth or Worse?

I wanted to share my view on this topic long ago, but apparently my laziness and some lack of time and general enthusiasm have prevented me from sitting down to note my ideas on the benefits and drawbacks of the formal University education.

Well, after I have gone through my 5-year course at Minsk State Linguistic University, I can well congratulate myself on completing a lengthy and rather tedious assignment. On the other hand I am now a proud possessor of a longed for diploma (a certificate with an A4 sheet of paper stating my grades for most of the subjects studied by me).
